Zion Lodge: The only lodge in the Zion National Park

Posted on January 20, 2011 | Hotels2 Comments

‘Zion’ refers to the refuge or place next to God and this feeling is well invoked by this only lodge within the Zion National Park. Tucked well amidst soaring canyons, cliffs, and diverse flora as well as fauna, the Zion Lodge ensures the best stay amidst the park wilderness. Planned by Gilbert Stanley Underwood before some 80 years and rebuilt before 44 years in just 100 days, the lodge’s classic appearance is still well preserved making the visitors feel that they are truly in a national park. However, you need to make reservations before six months in advance and you know why!

The Zion lodge offers historic cabins whose major features are private porch, two double beds, gas log fireplace, and full bath. In addition, there are motel rooms a majority of which offer queen-size beds or king-size bed, balcony or private porch, and full bath. No matter which you choose; all of them are well-equipped with air conditioning, coffeemakers, hair dryers, radio alarm clocks, and phones.

Out of the total 115 rooms, 40 are cabins, while 75 are motel rooms. Of these, 28 cabins are complete with two double beds, while 12 of them have one queen bed. However, do not expect for any rollover beds. All of these cabins are located at a short walking distance from the lodge. Coming to the motel rooms, you will find within a 37 inch flat-screen television as well as channels from the satellite. All of them are situated within the walking distance from the lodge as well as the trekking trails. This means that the Zion Lodge is situated in between the hiker’s destination! In these rooms, you can expect cribs as well as rollaway beds. Among these motels, there are two accessible rooms as well as two ADA rooms featuring roll-in showers.

There are also six suites each of which features a sleeping room with king-size bed, sitting room, a 37 inch flat-screen television, satellite channels, and wet bar with sink, faucet, and a small refrigerator. All of these are on the second floor.

4:00 pm; Check-out: 11:00 am; Group check-out is 10:00 am – these timings remain the same throughout the year.

The recently renovated dining zone, the Red Rock Grill, is a full service restaurant offering spectacular vistas of the Zion Canyon. It offers all the three meals of the day: breakfast from 6:30 to 10:30, lunch from 11:30 to 3:00, and dinner from 5:00 to 10:00. However, winter timings will vary. Reservations are needed. In suitable seasons, its open-air terrace is also a good choice incorporating 50 people. This is open throughout the year and the dress code is casual.

Casual, outdoor dining is possible at the Castle Dome Café, a seasonal eatery famous for its relaxed lounging as well as park charged dishes. Castle Dome Café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the high season. It is admired for its continental breakfast that include espresso, coffee, cinnamon buns, and ‘snack bar’ items like hot dog, burger, ice cream, and fries. Most of the times, the tour operators prefer to make arrangements well in advance for meals in the café or dining room.

All the facilities of the Zion Lodge is operated by the Xanterra Parks & Resorts that aim at setting the ecologically sound resorts that adjust to the natural surroundings.

I liked:

Possible to drive up to the lodge despite of the running shuttles in its season, coolly lit nights.

I disliked:
Flashlight required reaching to your cabin.

From $162 with special winter rates from December to mid-March.

Children who are within 16 are welcome here for free provided they stay with an adult in the same room and with the existing bedding.

I liked the fact that the guests can drive their vehicles all the way up to the lodge and this can be done during shuttle only season too. The lodge has excellent recreation facilities.

I have stayed at this place and have really enjoyed it. There are plenty of rooms and things won’t get too cramped in here. I will heavily recommend this place for anyone looking to go for a holiday.
