World Aids Day 2011 – Come Join for a Safe World
Come December 1 and you should put up your antennae and fix yourself for the safest and most secure world that you can create. For this is the day of the World AIDS day. This is the day when you can take time out and specially devote it for a cause – AIDS. Raise the awareness of the condition and spread the knowledge.
THINK
Have you ever thought what exactly happens after all those memorials you raise in honour of those who have died out of AIDS. Well even if these memory occasions and events are observed even by the Government sometimes, the speeches and the forums notwithstanding, the proclamation of the World AIDS day has certainly made a difference to many. In the year 1995, it was the President of United States who made an official announcement regarding observing December 1, as World AIDS day.
Between the years 1981 and 2007, many have died out of AIDS and around many more would be inflicted with the condition in the coming years if we do not spread the awareness. As of recent history, this has become the greatest epidemic.
World AIDS day was originally thought of in the year 1987, two officers of information, James Bunn and Thomas Netter. They attended the World Health Organisation in Geneva and here they conceived the concept and presented it to the Director of the Global Programme on AIDS, Dr. Jonathan Mann. The idea was accepted and the day for the World AIDS day was decided to be December 1 in the year 1988.
December 1 was the chosen date as it was assumed that this date was very much later after the elections and very near the Christmas holidays so a good spot for the news to have something to talk about.
Thus started the World AIDS day festival and the whole theme was focused on educating the young and the innocent about it. The first couple of years was spent thus. But later people started criticizing saying that even a senior age group could be inflicted with AIDS and then started other themes. These themes brought the attention of the others who understood how not to have a stigma about AIDS and how the family could contribute to making the AIDS victim more comfortable.
The World AIDS campaign then took birth in the year 2004 as an independent campaign and every year Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI let out a message to the world and specially to the doctors and patients on this day.
From the time it was born, till today, the World AIDS day has always had a theme attached to it. This theme is generally decided with the co-ordinated efforts of the global organizations for health and the other related people.
In the year 2008, the Global Steering Committee chose the theme and the basic theme of “Stop AIDS” would be constant with the pattern of expressing it varying.
So this year too, set aside your time for World AIDS day and start giving thought.
