The Grand Canyon of the Pacific

Waimea Canyon is considered to be one of the largest canyon in the Pacific and the sight is truly dramatic. The Canyon is measured upto 10 miles long, 1 mile wide and more than 3,500 feet deep. This canyon is believed to have carved out by rivers and floods some thousand years ago. These rivers and floods were supposed to have flowed from the summit of Mount Waialeale.

This Canyon is one of the major spots of tourist destination in the region and is known to be one of the most amazing places to visit here.

The Canyon has been developed by the volcanic eruptions and the lines on the walls of the canyon depict this. The lava here has flowed down since centuries. It is said that even though the Canyon is smaller than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, yet the beauty of this place lies unparalleled. The Canyon is surrounded by the Koke’e State Park which is almost spread over an area of 4,345 acres of land and has almost 45 miles of trails which run through the canyon. There are many interesting sites of tourist interest to visit in the area.

The Waimea Canyon has some interesting destinations to visit around the place. These places are of great tourist interest. There are excellent gorges around the area from where you can have a look at the canyon. The Kalalau Valley is also situated near the canyon and the best time to visit this place is in the morning. The popular Alakai Swamp is also situated in the same area and this place is one of the most interesting places to be in. The Ranger’s Station is also nearby and near the station is the Koke’e Museum which is of great tourist interest. There are also places where you can head in for hiking here.

There are many interesting activities in which you can indulge in the Waimea Canyon.

You can explore the canyon and get to know about the secrets of the place. Mark Twain fondly nicknamed this canyon as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. You will find the carvings on the canyon in beautiful hues of red, green and browns. These colors have appeared due to the volcanic eruptions in the place.

Visit the Koke’e State Park. This park stretches over 4, 345 acres and is one of the most amazing sites to visit near Waimea Canyon. There are 45 hiking trails here which makes its way into the Waimea Canyon. This place is known to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region and tourists from all over the world visit this park.

You can also take a helicopter ride around this place. There are some beautiful waterfalls, sea cliffs and the Mountain Wai’ale’ale can be seen from the helicopter ride. There are different tours which are available in the area and these tours are simply the most amazing ones.

You can also get into the Zodiac Raft here, which is one of the most amazing rafts in the site here. At the Na Pali Coast in Kaua’i, there is a 22 mile stretch of volcanic cliffs and you can get to the place in a boat or raft in the river there. This is one of the most cherished activities in the area.

The Limahuli Garden and Preserve is one of the most amazing locales in this place. This garden was selected as the best natural botanical garden in the year 1997 by the American Horticultural Society. This garden and the preserve extend over 1,000 acres in a tropical valley and covers over three ecological zones on the north shore of Kauai’s and Ha’ena.  There is also a ¾ mile walk on a loop trail here.

Do not forget to take a ride on the Kaua’i Plantation Railway. This rail ride takes you across the 100 acres of agricultural fields. This ride is a narrow gauge train which is one of the authentic ones in the area. The ride is a 30 minute journey and is quite informative and takes you across some of the fields in the area. The wooden cars are named as the “King Kalakaua style” and these are simply amazing.

You can also take a trip and explore the Wailua River Valley where you can either take a boat or a kayak. This river valley is simply the most amazing one and some of the popular movies like the “Outbreak” and the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” have been shot here.
