Trekking in the Garhwal locales

Amongst the many trekking routes in India, the Garhwal Himalayan trekking route surely deserves a mention as it is one of the major travel escapades in the country. Alongwith the Sikkim and the Ladakh Himalayas, the trekking fever here is at its height due to the presence of the elegant waterfalls and the rugged terrains that dot the entire area. So while you are in the Garhwal trekking zones enjoy the best trekking experience in India .If you are seeking thrill and adventure in your travels then Garhwal is the place you should be in  and as the Holy river Ganga flows through this region , you would surely love to bask in the pleasures of this lovely region.

The trek starts from Haridwar where you reach from Delhi. From here you would be driven to Rishikesh and taken around the place too.

The third day would see you proceeding to Uttarkashi which is around 170 kms and is around four to five hours drive from Rishikesh. At Uttarkashi you would see the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering which is very much an attraction here .The place is also the major gateway to the expeditions in the region of the Gangotri Glacier.

The fourth day of the trek would see you going to Gangotri from Uttarkashi. This is around 95 kms from Uttarkashi and is at a height of around 10,000 feet. The whole expedition proves to be a great adventurous experience and when you reach Gangotri, you would be fulfilled as you see the most magnificent scenic delights here. The sheer majestic nature of the Himalayan ranges and the absolutely serene ambience here is what brings people trekking to such Indian destinations.

As you go round the place, the lovely gorge at Bhairon Ghati is sure to enthrall you with its simplistic elegance and then of course the steel guarder bridge here is another tourist delight. Gangotri is believed to be the place where Ganga descended on Earth from Heaven. A temple with the presiding deity as Goddess Ganga is here and the devotees come here in plenty to pay respects to their Goddess. Situated at an elevated level of 3200 m, the whole area seems blessed with the collections of pines and deodar. The Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa constructed the temple and annually people undertake a pilgrimage to this pristine land of the Goddess Ganga. Many Dharamshala and ashrams are found in the place along the river. It is also believed as per Hindu Mythology that Raja Bhagirath worshipped Shiva on a slab of rock. This is today called the Bhagirath Shila and is located near the temple. Also there is another attraction here and that is the submerged Shivling which is found in the river. It is said that Lord Shiva sat here while he received the Goddess Ganga in his locks.

After this there is another day’s trek which takes you to Gomukh which is where the Ganga is said to originate. From Gangotri one goes to Bhojwassa and then to Chirbasa, against the background of the River Bhagirathi. From here, the trek takes you through dense forests and finally you reach Tapovan which is a steep climb up. From here the whole area looks beautiful. this is a dream destination for all adventure and trekking enthusiasts so get the best of this region and then take the descent down to Bhojwassa back and then to Gangotri and back to Haridwar.
