Posted on October 20, 2010 | Top 102 Comments

Until today, whichever big cities across the globe I have visited, I was always attracted to its appealing and grand skylines. These were of more interest to me as after all, it is only under this view of the tallest skyscrapers and detailed architectural monuments that all the city life starts and ends daily. If the downtown is the economic as well as an ethnic engine, then the skyline is its roof. Therefore, get ready to appreciate these top 10 skylines on the planet.

Hong Kong

Leaving behind New York and Chicago, this ranks first in this list because of its greatest skyline that is not to be seen anywhere else on Earth. With over 40 monstrous edifices being more than 200 m tall of which 4 are out of the 17 world’s tallest edifices, Hong Kong deserves this position. 30 of these are the constructions of this decade. Further, there exists a plethora of residential condominiums boasting 60 stories. Well, justifying this is the title of the “The world’s tallest city” by Egbert Gramsbergen and Paul Kazmierczak in their Skyscraper Cities Ranking List that is available online. The skyline revealing the soaring towers shines with reflections and lighting. What makes it more exciting is its mountainous setting.

New York

This is the city with one of the most diverse and thickest skylines showing off a giant display of edifices and their styles. In fact, it is the most familiar skyline on Earth. Boasting a striking exhibit of 48 edifices of more than 200 m, the city’s greatest heritage is its skyscrapers. The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the World Trade Center are the first three tallest buildings. This financial capital offers dense and overwhelming display of structural designs from anywhere in the city. The joy lies in looking from within and from out. Fro the best views, head to the Liberty State Park and Staten Island Ferry.

New York skyline

This is among the cleanest and well planned cities on the planet and so it is obvious that its skyline shows how an architectural model can be brought to life. Despite the fact that the air traffic rules has restricted the height of the buildings below 280 m, the buildings still make up for the unique skyline with the considerable height and distance pattern. Seen in light colors, the skyline also shows the big span of foliage sprinkled around.

Singapore skyline

This was where the contemporary skyscraper was born. It holds 20 edifices that are more than 200 m of which three are in the list of world’s top 20 tallest edifices including tallest in North America. In this city, you will come across the superb architecture and great instances of modern skyscrapers. The main draw of this skyline is that the views vary distinctively and subtly at each point from where you look. Similar to Hong Kong and New York, even these skyscrapers soar along the shoreline. For ideal views, go to Adler Planetarium or US Cellular Field.

Chicago skyline

This is the most advanced city in China. It is also known for its quick recapturing of its lost position of being among the world’s greatest economic warehouses due to the tyrannical rule in the past. It is soon also becoming a platform of contemporary architecture and so undoubtedly is encompassing a plethora of soaring edifices stacked by the side of the crescent coast of the Pudong region. Here, you will come across 28 buildings rising more than 200 m, of which two are insanely tall by being more than 400 m.

Shanghai skyline

This is the home of seven edifices in the skyline, which are more than 200 m of which the CN Tower is the tallest isolated edifice in the entire North America. In fact, this tower also boasts the highest observation deck on Earth making it possible for the tourists to easily recognize the city’s skyline. The city is known for its varied collection of popular structural elements. Its revolutionary condo boom is still on due to which condos of 30 storeys adorn now the lakeshore. For the best views, be at the Centre Island.

Toronto skyline

One more Chinese city in this list makes it sure that China boasts some of the most stunning skylines on the planet. Once a small fishing hamlet, Shenzhen is now a lively metropolis nourishing over 5 million people. The architectural development continues to adorn its skyline with more than 20 tall edifices of over 200 m of which one is the eight tallest edifice on Earth – Shun Hing Square. If you see this skyline, you will forget the rest of the skylines in the world – such is the effect of the dreamlike skyscrapers that shine with lights and neon signs after dusk. But, sadly, the concentration of too much smog is spoiling this view.

Kuala Lumpur

For me, this is the most stunning city on the planet with its remarkable modern buildings trying to touch the sky. Although the skyline is not that thick or dense, the edifices do rise making them exceptional pieces of architecture. There are some 10 edifices that are more than 200 m of which three are in the list of top 25 tall buildings in the world. And yes, do not forget to spot the tallest twin edifices namely, the Menara Tower and the Petronas Towers.

This eastern world capital offer a skyline with distinct features due to which it differs from the other city skylines. The Tokyo Tower adorning the skyline changes its color daily at night. Besides this, there are some 17 buildings of more than 200 m. The interesting fact of this vast and dense city is that each of its corners seems to give a different skyline view. The necessary red lights on the top of all tall edifices give a fantastic look to the skyline at night. Like New York in the west, Tokyo in the east is packed with neon lights and distinct modern architecture offering eye-catching view of the skyscrapers.

Tokyo skyline

The skyscrapers of this city are split into groups, which scatter between the residential zones and the key business districts. Now a days, the skyline of Seoul boasts more residential towers that are over 50 storeys high. Over 10 edifices make up the skyline view from some distance.
