The Taj Mahal – A Journey down the Historical Love Lane

Looming over the skies of Agra, the city in Northern India, the River Yamuna witnesses one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Taj Mahal. Agra, one important Indian historic destination thus enthralls the tourist with its magnificence and grandeur. Existing since the 16th century, this love monument has the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal the Queen of Emperor Shah Jahan.

Agra, a part of the Golden Triangle Tour in Indian Tourism. is an important historical Indian destination not only because of the Taj Mahal but because of its historical past too. Well connected with the world the Agra Cantt is the main railway station and Agra the airport nearby.

While in Agra, the Taj Mahal automatically becomes an important tourist spot. Festivals of Indian arts, crafts and the culture are held in the month of February at this pristine monument.  A procession consisting of drummers, camels and elephants is a spectacular sight. There is also a food festival and entertainment for the kids. It is worthwhile to see this festival and the venue is historical as this where it is believed that the artisans constructing Taj Mahal used to reside.

The striking feature of the city is to see the Taj Mahal changing colors as per the changing light in the day. Tourists are advised not to entertain the beggars here as they would only fleece you if your show you are ignorant.

Another lovely place to visit in Agra is the Mehtab Bagh which was earlier a garden during the Mughal rule. Tourists come here to experience exotica incomparable.

Though Agra is dirty and ill organized yet the trip is necessary as the Taj Mahal shouldn’t be given a miss in the Indian tour. One can visit Agra between the months of November to February. The climate is good at this time.

The city of Fatehpur Sikri nearby is another interesting place to visit while in Agra. Located around 25 miles from the city of Agra, it is a perfect haven for Nature lovers. The historical destination becomes even more interesting when we get to see the Akbar’s Mausoleum at a place called Sikandra which lies around 13km from Agra.


Agra is the site of historical monuments and the tales of the past come tumbling down here. One such place to visit is the Agra Fort. Also known as the Red Fort, this is made of sandstone basically and has touches of pietra and marble done up under the supervision of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor. This is where one finds the legendary Diwan-e-Am and Diwan-e-KHas.

The next in line of interest in Agra, the historical Indian gem is the Jama Masjid. Built in memory of Jahanara Begum, the daughter of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, this beautiful mosque is devoid of minarets and has a stirkingly unusual kind of dome.

Agra, the Indian princess city is a city to experience and a place to remember. With all this in tow, Agra surely is a must visit for a history lover.
