The Lion City- Singapore

The name of the city Singapore is derived from the original Malaya name of the city which was Singapura which means the lion city. The study reveals that the name lion city was given but no lions, not even the Asian lions ever existed in Singapore. Singapore has tigers that too Malay tigers, after whom the name was been given. Sir Stanford Raffles was the founder of the country. Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia.

Singapore country is made up of nearly 63 islands reclaimed together. Till the date there are many reclamation projections going on Singapore and as a result the area of 582 sq.km has increased to 704 sq.km also it is expected to grow more 100 sq.km by 2030. Singapore is a cosmopolitan country and the approximate population of the country including the non-residents is about 6 millions. Singapore is the second-most densely populated independent country in the world. The major ethnic groups in Singapore are Malay, Indian and Chinese moreover Chinese is the major ethnic group in the country. The official languages of Singapore are Tamil, English, Malay and Chinese.

Singapore is a democratic country with the People’s Action Party as the dominant Party. People’s Action Party has won every election ever since 1959. After the independence, the standard of living of the country have rise. The Economist Intelligence Unit in year 2009 declared Singapore as the 10th most costly city in the world and third most costly in Asia after Tokyo and Osaka. Singapore dollar, represented by the symbol S$ or the abbreviation SGD is the currency of Singapore.

According to the Koppen climate classification system the temperature ranges from 22 °C to 34 °C. The climate of Singapore is like tropical rainforest climate. The seasons in Singapore are not distinctive. The climate has uniform temperature and heavy rainfall with high humidity. The hottest months in Singapore are June and July, while November and December are the part of monsoon seasons.

buddhist templeSingapore is truly said to be a melting pot of culture. The melting pot has Chinese, Arabic, Indian and Malay communities coming together. Tourists here are truly excited to see Chinese women wearing Arabic dresses. Singapore is truly the most distinct place to be visited.

As it is well known by now Singapore is a multi-religious country. It is stated that 51% of resident Singapore practice Buddhism and Taoism. Muslims constitute 15%, making Islam the second dominant religion in the country. Malays hold the majority of Muslim population followed by Indian Muslims and Chinese Muslims. Around 14%, mostly Chinese, Eurasians, and Indians, practice Christianity.

Few of the most favored tourists destinations in the city are Riverside, Orchard Road, Bugis and Kampong Glam, Chinatown, Little India, Balestier, Newton, Novena and Toa Payoh, North and West, East Coast, Sentosa Island etc.

According to the Asian standards Singapore is very expensive but it’s cheap for the visitors from Europe and the West. All those budget travelers should remembers that Singapore is 5 times costly than Indonesia and twice costly than that of Malaysia and Thailand and thus they are suggested to make their budget accordingly.
