Tansen was a great singer in the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. He was a great exponent of Hindustani classical music in the style of drupad. He was one of the nine jewels in the court of the Emperor. The beauty of his voice was so silken that people used to get stupefied with his tenacity. In fact, it is said that when Tansen sang, the clouds used to thunder in joy and rain used to fall. There have been instances where his ragas or melodies have lit up lamps and have held not only people but also animals and birds completely hypnotized. The Tansen tomb at Gwalior which is the venue of the Tansen Samaroh was built in memory of this legendary classical singer.
