Come December 10, and the UN gets ready to observe the Human Rights Day. This marks the anniversary of the day the declaration of human rights was made. So the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is celebrated on this day.

This is the time for all of us to think about the need to ask for one’s rights and the necessity of such Human Rights in our life. Why exactly is it important and what is the meaning of Human rights – such questions and many more arise in the minds of many. On this day, the day salutes all those thoughts and all those actions that one has taken and will take towards asserting Human Rights in the world.

Human Rights Day

So what do we do on Human Rights Day?

Have events that are focused on the concept of declaration of human rights globally. You can have it on December 10 or in and around that date as per your convenience. Children and teenagers have to be made aware about their rights and the ifs and buts of such rights. So have events detailing this. It is important for the young citizens to know why exactly we have to uphold these rights in the community and how society could be made better with such awareness.

You can have peaceful protest campaigns to make people aware of the conditions that others live in across the world and the pathetic human rights violations that occurs almost on a daily basis in these parts of the world. We have to know where these places in the world are , where such rights haven’t yet been made possible and respected.  It is important that people know that these rights have to be recognized and followed for the betterment of every society. You can have cultural activities depicting the importance of human rights. Have a performance or an exhibition . Showcase your talents and educate people through dance, drama , music etc,. Art is also an excellent expression of emotions . So make sure you are there to experience the forms of arts which allow human rights to be made public in the entire world.

Human Rights are an endeavour to spread the knowledge of rights across the globe so it is not a public holiday. It is only a public focused day.

Human Rights Day celebration

In the year 1947, the Declaration of Human Rights was drafted in the month of January. This drafting underwent lot of discussions and the changes were made till the year 1948. The main aim was to form a foundation for human rights all over the world. This aimed to bring about a marked difference in the direction of the events after the Second World War. It also wanted to bring about a change in the colonialism that was rampant all over the world. This document is considered to be the most popular and the most translated in today’s times. This Human Rights Declaration is today available in around 360 languages and there are translations being made still.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was announced after the UN General Assembly adopted it at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris in France. It was done on December 10, 1948. The first Human Rights Day was on this year on the same date. Then every year the custom has been followed. A particular theme is observed every year.
