Pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh

Once known as the pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh has the honor of being the capital and the most popular city of Cambodia. Phnom Penh is also the historical, economical, cultural, industrial and commercial center of Cambodia. These days Phnom Penh is gaining its popularity again with the increasing days. The place is popular as a place to live. Phnom Penh city has many tourist attraction are it is becoming successful to have a large number of national as well as international tourist visiting the city every year. Traditional Khmer and the French influenced architecture of Phnom Penh are well known across the globe.

Bassac riverLocated at the interjection of three most important rivers Bassac, Mekong and Tonlé Sap Phnom Penh is located in the southern-central area of Cambodia. The above mentioned rivers provide the fresh water for the city. The all year around temperature is quite hot and only few variations. The average temperature of the city is about 18° to 38 °C. Phnom Penh city experiences tropical monsoons. The best time to visit the city is from November to January the temperature and humidity during this time is quite low.

Even though being a capital of Cambodia country, Phnom Penh is a fairly young city. It started rising only after 1866. The city has various historical and cultural sites. The French ruled the city for nearly a century that was from 1863-1953. Also it got independent in the year 1960. In early 80’s the city started gaining its population and later it started progressing. Phnom Penh is also a comparatively new travel destination. It got the status of being the adventure destination just around a decade ago. The city now enjoys for being the centre of urban as well as economic development.

The total area of the city is about 375 square kilometers. According to the counting made in 2008, the total populationTheravada Buddhism of Phnom Penh is about 1,325,681. The municipality of Phnom Penh has 7 khans, which are the 7 administrative centers in the city. These khans are also divided in 76 Sagkats and 637 Kroms. Nearly about 90% of the city has Cambodian residents. Also you will find Chinese and Vietnamese people living here. People from various ethnic groups namely Kuy, Mnong Preh, Chams, Chong, Thai’s and Budong reside in Phnom Penh.

About 90% of the total population of the city practices Buddhism. Islam is the next dominant religion of Phnom Penh. Theravada Buddhism is the state the state religion of Phnom Penh. In 1975 when Khmer Rouge took over Phnom Penh, Christianity was nearly wiped out from the city.phnom penh hotel Even though Khmer is the official language of the city English and French are also widely used among the locals in the city.

The economy of Phnom Penh started growing since 1990. The city always had the economic-growth rates in double digits. The economic boom was noticed due to the introduction of new bars, hotels, restaurants, buildings areas all across the city.

The few of the most attractive destination of the city are Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National, Tuol Sleng (S-21) Genocide Museum, Choeng Ek, Tonle Bati Lake, Phnom Tamao Animal Sanctuary, Paragon Center, Soriya Market etc.
