Visit Europe and you are bound to be fascinated by the innumerable arenas of art that greet you here. It seems as if you are in an open land of pleasurable delights and pleasing sights. So while you are here in the region of the best art displays, Spain wouldn’t come as a surprise considering the fact that you are in the art paradise of the world. Museums in Spain are the mainstay of tours here and the Museo Del Prado is one such very popular national art museum in Spain. Situated in the central part of Madrid, this has some of the best collections of art from Europe belonging to the 12th century and to the 19th century. It is totally based on the earlier Royal Collection and also has the best collections of Spanish art.

Museo Del Prado

It was founded as a museum of sculpture and paintings and also has other types of works. There is a new wing that has displayed around 400 painting and is used for the temporary expositions. Del Prado is today one of the most visited museums in the entire word and has the greatest collections of art. So get to see the works of artists like Francisco De Goya and Velazquez here and also the works of Rubens, Titian and Bosch. Incidentally Francisco de Goya is the artist who represented most of the collections in the museum. Today the collection has around 7,600 paintings 4,800 prints and 1000 sculptures and also many works of historical documents and artistic representations. The Museum would be showcasing more than 1300 works in the main buildings and around 3,100 works would be given on loan to be displayed in other museums. There are more that are in storage.

Francisco De Goya
The Las Meninas by the artists Velazquez is the best art work in the museum and Velazquez gave Museo Del Prado the best works and it was only his keen sensibility and watchful eye that was responsible for displaying some of the best collections in the museum and was the main reason that the arts from Italy came to Spain.

Popular for being the largest art gallery in the entire world today the Prado has sculptures, coins, drawings and other works of art which provide the best collection of paintings and exhibit more than 2000 such works and in spite of the lack of space there are more works that are shown here than any other museum. There are museums in the word that have as many artistic displays as the Prado has in storage.

Today the royal collections in the Del Prado come from the collections of the old Trinidad Museum as well as from bequests, acquisitions and donations. It was during the rule of Charles III that the history of the museum began and he tried to create a single collection of art under a common roof. It was not till Fernando VII ruled that the Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture was created. This happened in the year 1819 and the death of the kings caused a lot of inheritance problems and also put the unity of the collection in danger. Then gradually Spain saw monarchy fading away and the museum became the national property and thus got to be known as the Del Prado National Museum.

From then till today all the art works here have withstood many challengers and were transferred too many times during the Spanish Civil War. It ended in the Swiss city of Geneva and then the works were returned to Madrid sometime during the Second World War. Today the arts exhibited in the Museo Del Prado are shown in two buildings – the Villanueva Building and the Cason Del Buen Retiro. The Villanueva building is the place where most of the works are stored.
