Moving Beyond The Iand Of Gold – Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the capital of South African province of Guateng. In Zulu language, Johannesburg is called Egoli which means gold.

In one of the richest province of South Africa, Johannesburg has large deposits of minerals like gold and diamond. Today, this city is a commercial center of South Africa and is popular tourist destination with a wide range of activities and sights for tourists to enjoy.


Johannesburg lies on Highveld, as the eastern plateau of South Africa are called. The city is 1,735 meters above the sea level. While its northern and western sides are flanked by mountain ranges, its eastern ranges are relatively flatter.



Johannesburg has a pleasant climate throughout the year, thanks to its high altitude.

The weathers here often merge with one another. In summers, it’s not very hot with pleasantly cool nights. The average temperature between October and March is about 28 degree Celsius. These months also witness most of rainfalls here, especially the mountainous regions.  Winters are not very extreme, except for the freezing chilly nights. The average daytime temperature in winter is about 25 degree Celsius. In areas with a higher altitude, there are chances of frost and mild snowfall during winters.

There could be strong winds carrying loose dusts and mine dumps in August, and that’s the only time Johannesburg faces a bad weather.

The city has suitable weather for you to enjoy almost throughout the year. Most of the tourists regard the early summer in September or October, the autumn in March and April and from mid of December to January as the best times to visit the city.

Attractions for tourists

While the scenic beauty in Johannesburg is not as great as that is Cape Town or Durban, it certainly is not a disappointment for tourists. An expanding inland city, the half-an-hour drive to the city from the airport speaks volume of what the city is all about. The six-lane highway introduces you the industrial and commercial center that Johannesburg is, with posh malls such as Eastgate Mall and Burma Lake Market world.

Further into the city, there is the Gold Reef City Theme Park and Casino, the Johannesburg Zoo and Military Museum, the Apartheid Museum and the Newtown district where culture thrives.

There are a number of tourist information centers and offices, and the city’s official website too is well equipped with information the tourists would need.

There are a number of markets like the African Flea Market and the Roof Top Market known for their collection of crafts from all of Africa. There are parks, sanctuaries, botanical gardens and natural reserves as well, protecting a rich biodiversity.

For those who like sports activities, there are options for ice-skating, wall climbing, go-carting and also dirt riding. Children too could bike around in arenas meant just for them. A number of heritage sites too are found in this Sub-Saharan city.


The Rand airport, Grand Central airport, Lanseria airport and the main O.R. Tambo International airports are well-connected with regular services to domestic and international destinations.

Johannesburg Airport

For the public and to tour the city, there are plenty of options available. The Minibus or shared taxi, the metro and bus service are widely used modes of transport in the city.

The metro also connects Johannesburg with cities like Soweto (South West Township), Pretoria (which is at a distance of 60 kilometers from Johannesburg) and other such towns.

The railway lines run though the older regions in the city, in its southern part. The northern region do not have railway tracks yet.

There are private services as well that make for a comfortable means of transport. For a view of the city on the run, you could get in one of those City Slickers, the open topped buses that conduct tours of Johannesburg.

Meterd taxis are not very common to Johannesburg.

One of the largest metropolitan area of the world, the South African city of Johannesburg is making an effort to bring in more convenient way of commuting for the public and also the tourists.
