Jakarta can be truly stated as the city of contrast. It is traditional at the same time it is modern, it is poor but also very rich and it is lonely at the same time worldly place. It is truly an experience to be in a place like Jakarta. The population of the city is also very much diverse; there are various ethnic and cultural groups that together make a wonderful place called Jakarta. The motto of the country thus truly is Unity in diversity.

The capital of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta together with Greater Jakarta, make an area of around 637.44 square km. It is located at the northern side of Java Island; it has got the honor of being the center of government, commerce and industry. Also it has a vast communications network within and outside the country. Jakarta is not only country’s capital but also the economic, political as well as cultural center. Jakarta is the 12th largest city of the world and its metropolitan area, Jabodetabek gained the position of being the second largest in the world.

The height of Northern Jakarta is about eight meters from the sea-level. Thus during the raining season, lots of flooding takes place. On the other hand the southern parts of the city are a hilly area which is the origin of many rivers. Near by about 13 rivers flow from Jakarta. Since situated near the equator Jakarta faces hot and humid equatorial type of climate.

Jakarta’s old name was Sunda Kelapa, which was changed by the Japanese when the acquired Indonesia after the Second World War. Officially, a province Jakarta enjoys being the capital of the country. Being a province Jakarta is divided into five different cities (kota), each of which is headed by a mayor. Jakarta’s nick name is “The Big Durian”.

manufacturing industryThe economy of the city highly depends on the three most important areas that are financial service, trading, and manufacturing. The manufacturing industry produces electronics, automotive, chemicals, mechanical engineering and biomedical sciences manufacturing sectors. Jakarta city is stated to be the most luxurious and busiest in Indonesia.

One of the old ethnic groups called “Orang Betawi” in Jakarta speaks Betawi Malay, which is also spoken in the surrounding places namely Bekasi and Tangerang. Betawi Malay and the modern Jakarta Malay are the two variations of the same language. Betawi Malay is spoken by the local residents while modern Jakarta Malay is spoken by the immigrants and younger generations.

Jakarta’s is one of the most favorite tourist destination in Indonesia. Few of the tourists attractions are as follows, National Monument, Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta Cathedral, Wisma 46, Central Jakarta, National Museum of Indonesia, Fatahillah Museum, Wayang (Puppet) Museum, Satria Mandala Museum, and Maritime Museum, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Ragunan Zoo, Jakarta Old Town, Ancol Dreamland, Dunia Fantasi theme park, Sea World, Atlantis Water Adventure, and Gelanggang Samudra.

Apart from Singapore, Jakarta is one of most magenatic shopping places in Southeast Asian continent. There are number of shopping malls namely Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, eX, fX, Senayan City, Plaza Senayan, Ratu Plaza,Ratu Plaza Pondok Indah Mall, Mal Taman Anggrek, Mal Kelapa Gading, Mal Artha Gading, Mall of Indonesia, Mal Ambassador, and Pacific Place.

Traditional market likes Blok M, Tanah Abang, Senen, Glodok, Mangga Dua, Cempaka Mas, and Jatinegara are also quite famous here. Being a shopping paradise, every tear in the month of June-July Jakarta conducts annual Jakarta Great Sale. It takes place in mostly all the malls and stores around the city with many offers, deals and special discounts.
