Halle Tony Garnier is a major concert hall and exhibition venue in Lyon, France. The concert hall has an extremely eventful past, and is considered among the best auditoriums in France. There have been major acts like A C / D C, Metallica, Aerosmith, Mark Knopfler, Sting and many more international artists and pop singers. The Halle Tony Garnier was erected in the period between the years 1909 & 1914.

The concert hall is in the nature of an icon for the city of Lyon. The Hall was opened in the year 1914 at first as a part of the “industrial city” project. In the present time, the halle Tony Garnier is a venue for concerts, performances and exhibitions, it is a fact known to few that the concert hall was until quite recently a meat market for the city of Lyon.

The Halle Tony Garnier was until the year 1974 owned by a slaughter house in Lyon, and it was in the year 1975 categorized as a major historical structure. The hall also saw temporary use as an arsenal during the W W I. The Halle Tony Garnier is named after the architect Tony Garnier.

The architect derived inspiration from the glass and steel “metallic” architecture that was prevalent in the 19 t h century. The architect designed a purely concrete building with a steel frame supporting it, and an excellent glass roof, that made beautiful use of natural light. The hall is the last surviving example of the metallic architecture now.

The hall is extremely versatile and has excellent acoustics; there have been major bands that have performed here to packed audiences, as well as a number of business exhibitions and conventions. The concert hall is bathed in light constantly because of the splendid glass roof that lets all the light in. The 17, 000 sq meters of space, all of it without annoying pillars, which can be adjusted in whatever way possible makes for an excellent setting for all kinds of gatherings and functions.

Close to eight thousand spectators can be seated in the Halle Tony Garnier, and more than 16, 500 people along with standing capacity is reached when larger events are held. Thus the Halle Tony Garnier is the 3 rd biggest in terms of size in France, after the Palais Omnisports de Paris – Bercy and the upcoming Montpellier Arena.
