Beaches and dives of Noronha Island

Fernando De Noronha islandThe Archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, with its 21 islands, lies in the Atlantic Ocean. It is 354 kilometers away from the northeast coast of Brazil and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It occupies an area of about 26 square kilometers.

Best time to visit

The Island enjoys a tropical climate and can be visited at anytime of the year. It also depends on what you want to do here. April to November is good for snorkeling and diving here. For hiking, August is the month. Surfing is good in the months of December and January and turtles can be spotted nesting in the rainy season from December to May. For whale-watching, September-October is good.

How to Get to Fernando De Noronha

There are daily flights to the Airport of Fernando de Noronha from Natal and Recife on the northeast coast of Brazil. Ferries too ply between the Brazilian coast and the Island of Noronha.

  • The Fernando de Noronha Island is home to some of the best beaches in Brazil. These include the Praia Sancho Beach, the Conceicao Beach, the Porcos Bay, the Cacimba do Padre Beach and the Santo Antonio Port Bay among many others.

There are about 20 dive sites here, courtesy the warm waters, clarity and a rich marine life that include sea turtles, coral reefs, barracudas and Spinner Dolphins, as well as shipwrecks. Some of the good dive sites here are around the Ressurecta Island, Sapata Cavern, Suesto Bay, Pedras Secas and the Porto Santo Antonio. The Conceicao beach and Sancho beach are good for snorkeling.
  • A major attraction with the tourists in the Island of Fernando de Noronha is spotting the Spinner Dolphins from the Mirante dos Golfinhos or the Dolphin Point.
  • Waves here, especially those at the beaches of Bode, Boldro, Cachorro and Quixaba, are good for surfing.Cachorro beach

  • Deep Sea Sport fishing is particularly popular here, with fishes like Blue Marlin and Mackerel. The Island is also the venue for the Annual Ocean Fishing Tournament.
  • The Fernando de Noronha Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a rich marine life that includes fish species like tuna, high population of dolphins and is home to endangered species like the hawksbill turtle as well as tropical seabirds. The Island also is home to the only Insular Atlantic Forest and the mangrove swamp in the South Atlantic Ocean.
  • Hiking and by riding a horse can be an interesting way to explore the Island. There are 12-hours hike of the National Park, trails that have forts dating back to the 18th century and other sites worth exploring.

As evident from the above mentioned attractions and activities of this Atlantic Island, it’s meant for eco-travelers and nature-lovers. It is a paradise for beach people and for those who seek that adrenaline rush from water-sports like diving and snorkeling sites. Definitely a good holiday destination in Brazil and in the Atlantic!
