Dragsholm Slot: Most haunted castle of Denmark

Posted on December 20, 2010 | Historic DestinationNo Comment

Also known as the Dragsholm Castle, the Dragsholm Slot is among the most popular castles of Denmark. Although it is a celebrated hotel, the castle is more known for its eerie spirits due to which it is among the most ghostly castles in Europe. Nestled in the wonderful countryside of Odsherred, Dragsholm Slot is one of the most ancient castles in the country. Today, it is functioning not only as a hotel, but also as a restaurant, museum, and as the venue of several meetings, parties, and conferences. It is very surprising that how a haunted caste plays a role in all these services. But, believe it or not; this is true!

Since over 800 years, Dragsholm Slot has played many different roles such as originally a palace and then a medieval castle. Today, it is a baroque style hotel showing that the building has influenced by the changing days as well as the surrounding community. If you come here, then you will realize that the past and present are fused here that introduces gastronomy, landscape, and history in synchronization to ensure enjoyment.

In Dragsholm Slot, the hotel rooms are standard as well as luxury with the choice of single as well double ones. Each of them is distinct, modern, and comfortable. Few of these are accompanied with a view of the park, while some are on the fields, paved castle yard, and moat. Further, the location of the castle along with its flanking Odsherred facilitates the excitement of exploring the majestic scenery throughout the year. The room rates starts from DKK 995 and varies as per your room choice and the preference of an overnight stay. However, if you are looking only for a guided tour, then English tours are available between late June and early August (29th to 3rd) and that too on Tuesdays, while regular tours are held on Fridays at 4 pm and on weekends at 2:30 pm.

Erected by the Bishop of Rosklide in the 12th century, the Dragsholm Slot served as the home of the royalty and nobles. With this, it has been in gossip for its many ghost tales and eerie sounds. This reveals the dark history of the castle forming the highlight of the guided tours here. Among the ghosts, the three of them catch the attention of many tourists and locals alike.

One is known as the Grey Lady who is believed to be the maiden working here in the past. The lady however suffered greatly by a toothache inflicting much pain troubling the maiden. She finally got help via medical aid. Today, as a vote of thanks, she comes back to the castle every night for ensuring that all is fine for those who helped her.

Next famous ghostly appearance is of the White Lady who is known for her tragic love story. She is a young girl and a daughter of a former owner of the Dragsholm Slot. She loved a castle’s worker who was a commoner and so had to hide their love from the father. However, after some time, the girl’s father came to know about the affair and became so enraged such that he ordered for locking his daughter within the castle’s walls. In 20th century, when some workers were breaking the ancient walls of the new toilet complex, they spot a small niche holding a small skeleton in white dress. Today, this child-like sprit is spotted wandering in the corridors.

Lastly, the spirit of the Earl of Bothwell wanders here, who was a prisoner for five years in the castle in the 1500’s. As per the story, this man became mad due to imprisonment and consequently died in 1578. Today, his spirit seems to ride on a horse with carriage in the castle’s courtyard. Many also claim to hear the sound of horses running on the paved yard.
