Even being much popular as a tourist city Cambodia has a very lose transport system. During the war time and the continuous fights the transportation system was very badly damage. But even in the peace time it has not that developed. The country has a weak infrastructure. For the maintenance of the transportation system, Cambodia has received support from the Soviet by means of technical assistance and equipment.

Because of the under developed transportation system, Phnom Penh has no public bus service.

Phnom Penh has a good railway transport network. The first line was built between Phnom Penh station to Poipet on the Thai border by the French between 1930 and 1940. bamboo railwayThe Royal state Railways in 1942 made the final connection of Phnom Penh with Thailand. The railways transportation system was discontinued during the war-time and was started again in early eighty’s. The daily service between Phnom Penh was made weekly due to the lack of funds for maintaining the tracks and the rolling stock.

Nori or Lorries as it is locally known are popular as the bamboo railway among the international tourists. It is popular form of transport in the city. The train has platform of bamboo and have wheels with separate axles. They do run on regular tracks. The train has a speed of nearly 40km/h.

There are hardly any metered taxis in Phnom Penh but there is huge number of marked as well as unmarked taxis available many times they just wait outside the hotels. Thus the taxis can be easily made available through the hotel. Things that you must remember while using the taxi is decide the fare beforehand talk to any local regarding the estimate fare. You have a call a taxi option available to you in Phnom Penh cambodia taxiwhere you can call any time in day or night. The rates of the taxis are decided according to the distance and destination.

Outside the hotels and cruise you will definitely find many Motorbike taxis or motodops waiting for the tourists as well as pedestrians. You should negotiate fares before starting the journey and be aware that the fare is higher at night. Be aware when you are using a motodops as mostly the drivers of the motodops are from other city and country and thus it is possible that they are quite confused with the routes. Try and known the directions yourself.

Cyclos is also an exciting option for a smaller journey or just touring around the city. They are easily available across the city but many times they can be more costly than that of the taxis or motodops.

It is possible for you to hire a car for yourself with a driver. You can also drive a car yourself but that you need a medical claim and an international driving license.

You can anytime go out and try the option of the cheaply available bicycle and explore the city streets.
