Canary Islands: Mesmerizing archipelago

Posted on October 28, 2010 | Travel DestinationsNo Comment

This constitution of seven outstanding islands is a Spanish territory although it is nearer to Africa. Nestled in the Atlantic to the south of the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands are home to the five premier tourist destinations namely, La Palma, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Not scaring, but it is exciting to know that these islands are the apex of a giant volcanic range that survives beneath the ocean. Further interestingly, the islands are the abode of seven national reserves.

No matter whether you come with your family or friends, Canaries are among the perfect hangouts with its beaches, sports, gardens, monuments, museums, art galleries, volcanoes, and water as well as theme parks.

Tenerife, the largest one, is the most diverse territory with volcanic mountains, rocky shores, and cultivated areas of tasty bananas and tomatoes. Any tourist who come here always make it a point to explore its two charming cities namely Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz. The former city, also the busiest port, is the home of many stunning parks and three interesting museums: the Museo de la Naturaleza y El Hombre housing the artifacts of the oldest inhabitants, skulls, and mummies; military museum; and the Museo de Bellas Artes offering the paintings of Flemish as well as the Canarian artists. Before you leave the city, do also take a tour of the ancient church of La Iglesia de San Francisco. On the other hand, the city of Puerto de la Cruz is famous for its sun, surfs, and beaches. Other attractions here are the Loro Park where a myriad of parrots reside and the navigation museum of the Museo Naval de la Casa Iriarte. Comparatively, this city is loved more by the natural lovers; while the previous one is preferred by the cultural and historical fans.

Canary islands Tenerife

The Parks of Tenerife are among the top attractions on the Canary Islands. So, soak and refresh at the Agua Sur, Ocean Park, Aqua land offering a live dolphin show, and the Camel Safari park. Just in the outskirts of Tenerife, do visit the Mount Tiede, the highest volcano on Earth. This is now a national reserve where you can roam around and spot several calderas as well as rock formations – the elements that contributed vitally in the creation of the island. Look for the El Tiede’s National Park – the most preferred area of Hiking. Here, there are 21 marked trails categorized as per the level of difficulty. Then, one of the most pulling attractions is the Pyramids of Tenerife that are believed be connected to the civilizations of Egypt and Mexico.

Around 1.5 million tourists come to Gran Canaria every year. The secret behind this is nothing but the diverse list of attractions – deserts, beaches, horticulture sites, resorts, tropical forests, shops, and restaurants. You can choose to take a tour of the orange, banana, sugarcane, mangoes, papaya, avocadoes, and coffee plantations or can thrill yourself at any of the several water, theme, and amusement parks. If you are not tired, do also visit the exciting museums, historical monuments, botanical gardens, and architectural buildings. I could not discover these because of the shortage of time.

On this island, the most pristine town, but difficult to explore is Las Palmas. It is so vast that it is just not possible to explore it on foot. So, just catch a bus! Nestled on the northeast tip of Gran Canaria, the town is adorned with the Pueblo Canario featuring folk dancing and craft shops, the Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro dedicated to the religious artworks, and the Museo Canario housing the remains of the Guanches that is a local tribe.

Las Palmas

La Palma, the steepest one on Earth, is packed with forests, colossal ferns, and local pines. Here, the main draws are the Caldera del Taburiente as the world’s largest erosion crater and the main town of Santa Cruz de La Palma offering the 16th century edifices, paved lanes, ancient houses with balconies, and the replica of the Santa Maria, Christopher’s ship.

Want to see an island where there are no trees? Well, take yourself to Lanzarote that is declared as the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. With three resorts and black sand beaches, the island attracts visitors. However, it also scares a bit with its bizarre fields of lava. The title of the reserve as well as scary lava fields is well maintained by the Timanfaya Park. In its capital Arrecife, you can amble on the palm-fringed walkways and explore its golden beach as well as the forts – Castillo de San Jose with the Museum of Contemporary Art and Castillo de San Gabriel with the Museum of Archaeology.
