Blue Lagoon: Magical geothermal spa

Submitted by admin on October 22, 2010 – 12:05 amNo Comment

Adorning the land of Iceland and situated at 10 minutes walk from the Keflavík International Airport, the Blue Lagoon is a different world all together. With the rolling steam plumes, people scattered in the silica mud, and the soaring structures of the geothermal power plant all together make up for a small world. In these two statements, I have just revealed the two main attractions of the Blue Lagoon, which attract several new guests every year. Obviously, they are the surroundings and the lagoon itself.

As contrast to its surrounding dark lava rock formations, the Blue Lagoon offers the supreme healing experience. Now, if you are guessing it to be a natural hot spring full of minerals, then that is not the right option! In fact, the Blue Lagoon is a man-made lake that is fed by the water from the nearby geothermal power station. This station is known as Svartsengi that produces power by using the hot springs. Despite the fact that its surroundings boast plenty of lava, the water in the lake is blue. This is due to the fact that algae reside inside and that the lagoon has its own warm waterfall.

No matter as to whether the weather is cold or hot, the mineral rich lake pulls countless visitors as it offers an incredibly healing warm bath. Its warm waters are packed with the minerals like sulphur and silica making it apt to cure skin diseases. Among all the skin problems, psoriasis is said to be cured here by bathing in the Blue Lagoon amidst the water temperature of 40 °C (104 °F).

The working

The sea water shoots from below the surface at 2000 m where it gets fully roasted as the temperature there is 240°C and the pressure as compared to the land pressure is 36 times more. Now, this geothermal water also interacts with the cool magmatic intrusions and holds the subterranean minerals ensuring the formation of a remedial natural source that is known as the hey presto (hot mineral water).

The so-called warm water is ejected in the region besides which the lava makes its way, which is then used in running the turbines for generating electricity. When the water has passed through the turbines, it makes it way to a heat exchanger where the heat is separated to be offered to a civic heating system. Lastly, it is from here that the water is fed into the lagoon for ensuring therapeutic results to the bathing people.

The spa

Nestled in the lava field in Grindavík in the southwest Iceland, Blue Lagoon is undoubtedly the best natural spa! For your convenience and as per your choice, massages can be done either within the resort, in the lagoon, or at the outdoors in between the fresh atmosphere. You will not believe but even if you just float in its mineral-rich water, you will feel much relaxed. Just near to this is the psoriasis treatment centre offering hydrotherapy and massage spa.

However, you will need to take care of one thing – rules! Iceland has implemented a strict code for hygiene. According to this, before and after bathing, it is mandatory to take up a shower in the public shower area.
