This year too Valentine’s Day  falls on February 14, and is a great day of celebration and fun for everyone irrespective of young or old. This year since Valentine’s Day has come on a weekday, college goers and those at work would have to specially take time off for their loved ones. But this doesn’t really matter for all those who are in the Valentine’s spirit.

Valentines’ Day is also the time when you can take your loved one on a long drive. This is good for all those couples who want are working professionals. After a tired day at work, it is good to spend time with your companion and go on a long drive. This would completely relax you and make it a great day to remember. Go for a romantic dinner and also spend maximum time with each other, and put work and commitments aside for some time at least. Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love.

On this day, it is interesting to see how the shops get lit up with the reds dominating all decorations. So you can see red balloons, red fritters, red ribbons, red dresses, it is like the whole town is painted red. Red roses are the mainstay of this day so don’t forget to give this to at least one person you adore.

But did you ever wonder what exactly Valentine’s Day is and why it came to be celebrated? Well this is a holiday that is observed to honour one of the Christian martyrs called SaintValentine. Established in the year 496AD by Pope Gelasius I the holiday got annulled by Pope Paul VI.

Legend has it that the St. Valentine was persecuted and interrogated by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. He tried to get Saint Valentine converted to Roman paganism. But Saint Valentine declined and tried converting Claudius into a Christian. Due to this attempt, Saint Valentine was executed. But before he died he apparently healed a blind girl who was the daughter of the jailer. It is said that before he got executed and also realized that the girl was cured, Saint Valentine sent a card to this girl signed as “From your Valentine.” This Roman emperor Claudius did not allow his soldiers to get married as he felt this would make them give lesser performance in the army. But Saint Valentine while being held captive secretly performed the marriages of the soldiers in the Roman Emperor’s Army.

As Saint Valentine symbolized love, warmth and peace, Valentine’s Day is observed in memory of him and a Valentine is any person who you respect, love or care for.

So this Valentine’s Day if you have failed to express your feelings to the one you care for or adore, never mind, better late than never. Celebrate it with more fervour and extend that hand of love and warmth in memory of the feats of Saint Valentine.
